I’ve been planning on making From up North bigger and better for quite a while now. A facelift is in the making and will go live in a month or so. But until then I’d like to introduce a new addition to the site: Design competitions! For three months we’ll do one competition a month and each contest will have a winner and a runner up who gets some really sweet prizes from our sponsors. All entries will be added to our Flickr group after the competition has ended and the winners will be posted here on the site followed by a couple of honorable mentions.

How the contests work

Each contest will have a specific theme that you the designer can interpret however you’d like. It’s kinda like a graphic design version of Nick Campbell’s awesome 5 second projects. You can use photography, illustration, typography or whichever design area you’re most comfortable with. Be as creative as you like! ;)

Theme – Competition 1

The first theme is of course going to be “From up North“!
(If anyone would like to use the logo, or elements from it, you can download it here. It’s a Illustrator CS4 file, let me know if you need it in any other format.)

Prizes

And now to the good stuff!
The prizes consists of great products from Marketcircle, Go Media and TypeDNA!

1st prize:
- One license of Marketcirles Billings Pro* (value ~$193 USD)
- One of Go Medias three Ultimate Vector Collection’s (value ~$170 USD)
- One license of TypeDNA (value $39 USD)

2nd prize:
- Two of Go Medias nineteen Vector Set’s (value ~$70 USD)
- One license of TypeDNA (value $39 USD)

* Note: Billings Pro is only available for Mac.

A word from our sponsors

Go Media, Creative agency and organizers of Weapons of Mass Creation Fest:
“Taking place in Cleveland, OH, USA, WMC Fest is quickly becoming a must-attend event for creatives. Its goal is to inspire and enable the creative mind and will feature 20 speakers, 20 designers, and 20 bands over the weekend. Come to WMC Fest to network, collaborate, get inspired, learn new tricks, and meet new friends!”

Marketcircle, Creators of Billings Pro:
“Billings logical workflow and intuitive interface make quoting, invoicing, and time tracking simple. Generate invoices using one of 30 professionally designed templates to ensure you reflect your company’s image. Manage your client accounts and easily identify overdue clients – then send them a statement with the click of a button.”

TypeDNA, Creators of… well the plug-in TypeDNA:
“TypeDNA goes beyond any traditional font manager by providing tools that assist in choosing the right font. TypeDNA is the only font tool that runs both standalone and extends all its creative and management features inside Adobe® Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, and InDesign CS5. This unique approach significantly enhances font capabilities and complements the design process.”

hi sir, i can’t use your logo in Adobe Illustrator CS3

  • http://www.behance.net/mug25 mug25

Does “From Up North” have to be taken literally sir? ;)

    • http://www.fromupnorth.com/members/daniel_nelson/ Daniel Nelson

      Absolutely not, dear sir! ;)
It’s compleately up to you how you want use it. You can basically do whatever you want as long as this one constraint can be found somewhere in the artwork. For example: You could of course do something related to the site “From up North” but just as well just submit a nice winter photo that you relate to the north.

I’m not sure if that helped at all, Im just terrible at describing things! ;)

  • Michiel

nice! Can’t wait to see the submissions! I’ll try one myself if I find some time! ;)

  • Dimi

Nice Daniel, if I get some free time I might join in! Looking forward to seeing people submissions for sure!

    Hi Daniel.

I want to join the competition… anybody from any country can participate?

    Regards.

Absolutely, creatives from all over the world are most welcome to participate. ;)

Trying to make some free time for the contest, would be very nice to join!

Could you clarify the size limitations? You say the shortest side has to be at least 600px wide, but that leaves alot of options…

What would be your idea of the “Ideal Size” or your “Preferred Size”??

Sorry if my response sounds confusing, but I just want to make sure before I submit a design to you…

    Thanks

    • Daniel Nelson

Basically, I dont want the images to be to small. If the images are to large I can always scale them down. The widest an image can be displayed is 600px, thats why I have that limitation.

But as long as your image isnt tiny, you’ll be fine. ;)
